Hot Take | April 19, 2026, 12:26 a.m. EDT

Smithfield is showing a classic 'bull market bottoming' pattern where insiders and contrarian investors are buying the dip on headlines (Strong Buy upgrades), creating a sturdy 25.00-26.00 floor, but option sellers are aggressively hedging the risk of a revert to the 52-week low. The stock is undervalued on fundamentals (high growth, decent yield), but short-term speculators are selling volatility to protect against a breakdown. The move up to 29.00 is likely sustainable, but expect volatility chop as options buyers defend 25.00 levels.

As of April 19, 2026, 12:26 a.m. EDT: Speculators are positioning strongly for downside protection below the current 29.00 price in the very near term (May/June), with high volumes of puts at the 25.00 strike (a key support zone). However, the bulk of the Open Interest (OI) and Volume in the 2026-09-18 expiry are heavily skewed towards Out-of-the-Money Puts (95%+ of OI is OTM), suggesting bears are placing protective strikes further down rather than betting on a catastrophic crash. Call flow is relatively muted but concentrated in-the-money at 25.00, indicating a floor is being defined there. High implied volatility for the OTM puts suggests a market expectation of a potential correction or volatile pullback to test the 25.00-27.00 range, despite recent price momentum.
